C. I was wondering, why did Odysseus witnessed the suffering of Tantalus and Sisyphus while being in the land of the dead, or Hades in other words?
D. "So he grieved but I tried to lend him heart:..."( 266, Verse 574) This quotation symbolizes the personality of Odysseus in any shape or form. Although Odysseus is not a great leader, he possesses one of the great virtues we as humans have, caring for others. Caring for others can have a big impact on others during the Classical Era that Odysseus was living in.
E. In the second part of Book 11, the first actions that Odysseus do are that he asks his Phaeacian hosts to allow him to rest, but the king and the queen encourages him to continue the journey and, in addition, asks him if he met anyone that died during the Troy War in Hades. Odysseus responds that he saw Agamemnon, who tells him his story of his death by the hands of his wife, Clytemnestra. The next person that Odysseus sees is Achilles, who asks him if his son, Neoptolemus, is doing fine and overall. However, Odysseus tries to speak with Ajax, an Achaecan who killed himself after losing a contest that Odysseus beat him in over the arms of Achilles, but, as was intentioned, Ajax refuses to talk and slips away from the sight of Odysseus. Then, he sees Heracles, King Minos, the hunter Orion, and other people that Odysseus was familiar with. After being in Hades for a while, Odysseus witnessed the punishments of Sisyphus and Tantalus. Sisyphus' punishment was to push a boulder up a hill and throw it back to the beginning of the hill and doing the task over and over again, basically forever. Tantalus' punishment was that he was agonized by hunger and thirst, ever time he reaches for the grapes or bend down to get some water, both things will always be out of his reach. After witnessing these punishments, Odysseus finds himself muddled with souls asking about their relatives that are not dead. Odysseus becomes scared, runs back to the ship, and sails off with his crew to continue the journey of coming back home.
