1. You and your partner will be assigned a couple of chapters from Catcher in the Rye, an act from Macbeth, or a short story/poem we read this semester.
2. Look over the reading together and make sure you know it thoroughly. Talk to each other about plot, characters, and themes.
3. Post your responses to this discussion board thread.
4. Put both of your names AND the section of your reading at the top of the post (so I can give you credit!).
5. Discuss and write up the following on your post:
-A two paragraph summary of the reading.
-A list of the major characters (no more than 4) in your reading. Briefly describe who they are/what they do in these chapters.
-Describe how your reading exemplifies an important theme AND/OR the historical-cultural background of the literature (3-4 sentences)
-List three quotes from your reading you enjoyed or found important. Write out the full quote, the page number it was found, on and: a.) Paraphrase it or describe what it means, and b.) Explain why it’s important or why you enjoyed it. (Approximately 2 sentences for each quote.) DO NOT just pull the quotes off Sparknotes/Schmoop--go back to the book and find quotes. You will lose points if I see copying and pasting from a website...
Double check everything for spelling and grammar errors. Do a good job on this…not only because you’re getting graded on it, but because it will help you and your colleagues study for next week’s exam. It is worth 25 points and is due at the END OF THE DAY on Wednesday, June 4th. Good luck!

Michael Aliberti and Louis Bentivenga Section 5 "Eveline"
Summary of "Eveline"
Eveline is a short story written by James Joyce that takes place in Dublin, Ireland. The main character is Eveline Hill, a young girl who is reminiscing on events that took place during her childhood varying from good and bad memories. She remembers the pride and joy that her siblings would bring her as she took care of them after her mother passed away. There were also some opposite memories that she experienced including her father being drunk and aggressive with her. She becomes upset when she thinks of these memories and it reminds her of a dark place in her life. When she thinks of her mother as well as her brother Ernest, she becomes happy and still feels that she has something to live for. She has plans to leave the country with a man named Frank, in who she has very deep feelings for. Whenever Frank is in Dublin they always rekindle their relationship. Eveline also thinks of her father's thoughts on Frank and it immediately makes her upset because she does not know the choice to make. The promise she made "to keep the home together as long as she could" before her mother died, also begins to pop back in her head and she is faced with some guilty feelings. The guilty feelings begin to take over and as Eveline finally has the chance to go to England and eventually South America along with Frank, she decides to stay behind in Dublin with her family.
Major Characters: Eveline- The main character of the story who plans to runaway with her love although facing the guilt of leaving her family. Mr. Hill- Eveline's abusive father who displays traits of evil. Frank- Eveline's lover who she plans to runaway with Ernest- Eveline's brother who passed away along with her mother
Theme: The theme of Eveline is a sort of reminiscence back on her childhood. Eveline is remembering the good and the bad times of her childhood but there are a few specific thoughts of hers that stand out and make her sad, like her mother and brother passing away. Quotes: "She was about to explore another life with Frank. Frank was very kind, manly open-hearted. She was to go away with him by the night-boat to be his wife and to live with him in Buenos Aires where had a home waiting for her. " Eveline was about to go away with Frank. At this point she was almost certain she was going to go.
"As she mused the pitiful vision of her mother's life laid its spell on the very quick of her being that life of commonplace sacrifices closing in final craziness. She trembled as she heard again her mother's voice." She is hearing her mothers voice and now she is thinking about the decision she will make.
"He rushed beyond the barrier and called to her to follow. He was shouted at to go on but he still called to her. She set her white face to him, passive, like a helpless animal. Her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell of recognition. At this point she knows that she doesn't want to go with Frank.

1) At the begging of chapter 15 Holden wakes up, smokes some cigarettes, and thinks about Jane. As he is thinking about Jane, he decides to give Sally a call and he sets up a date with her. Later in the chapter he talks to some nuns at Grand Central Station about Romeo and Juliet. In chapter 16 Holden gets confused and really depressed. Holden's problem, he never stops to think about things and always wants companionship good or bad. On his date with Sally, Holden acts very weirdly. His emotions really seem to act up on the date. Holden begins to rant to her when everything seems to be fine. Holden keeps his emotions inside if him and once and a while he just lets them out. Holden then decides to call Carl Luce, who is an old friend from school. He asked him if he wants come meet him and have a drink with him. Carl agrees too come meet Holden. At the end of chapter 18 Holden goes into one of the worst depressions in the book. He says that he is glad the atomic bomb was invented so he can sit right on top of it when it blows up.
2)Holden- Main character of the novel. He is telling the story and everyone is able too see the world through his eyes. Sally- A very pretty girl that Holden is friends with. She agrees to go to the matinee play with him. Carl Luce- Kid that Holden used to go to school with. He decides to give a call. He agrees to meet Holden for a drink but Holden describes him as a phony.
3) The theme in this reading is depression and somewhat happiness. Throughout the book Holden is always depressed and down but in Chapter 18 he shows some happiness when he is with Sally. This can show the ups and downs of just everyday life. This is what Holden's story basically shows and tells to the readers.
4)"Goddam money. It always ends up making you blue as hell." (Chapter 15) This shows that Holden's family actually did have a lot of family and that he doesn't like the fact that not everyone can have it. In this whole chapter he says many quotes that also deal with the same matter, he doesn't like things that isolate him from other people, being alone makes him sad.
"Certain things they should stay the way they are." (Chapter 16) This other quote symbolizes how Holden wants to keep things the same, an example of this would be how he wants to keep innocence in kids and not let them change, he does this with his sister Phoebe a lot.
"You kept wondering what the hell would happen to all of them. When they got out of school and college, I mean. You figured most of them would probably marry dopey guys."(chapter 17) This one shows how society always sticks to a norm and how there is no options to choose from, everyone just sticks to the same things and he doesn't want to get trapped in the same way that everyone else already is. Macbeth: Act 5 Major Characters Macbeth In Act 5 Macbeth’s reign as king comes to an end. In the moment’s coming up to his death many things happen to Macbeth. Macbeth loses everything. He lost his wife and his kingdom. Everyone who once loved Macbeth is now his enemy. Macbeth realizes that his life will soon come to an end. He thinks about all the horrible things he did that led up to his death. Macbeth dies still hiding behind his ego.
Lady Macbeth In Act 5, Lady Macbeth is going through many things in her head. She is walking and talking in her sleep. She is doing this because of all the stress and guilt that she is feeling because of Duncan’s death. Lady Macbeth gets so overwhelmed with stress and guilt that she ends up killing herself.
Malcolm Malcolm knows that Macbeth is a horrible ruler. Malcolm also has a good idea that Macbeth killed Duncan in order to come to power as king. Malcolm wants to get Macduff an army to invade Macbeth’s kingdom. He successfully convinces Macduff to join the battle against Macbeth.
Macduff Macduff finds out that Macbeth killed his wife and son. He is enraged which allows Malcolm to convince him to join the battle. Macduff tells Macbeth that he was C-sectioned which would allow the prophecy to come true. Macduff kills Macbeth and puts his head on a sword.
Summary Act 5 begins with Malcolm and Macduff’s army preparing to march through Birnam wood. All of the soldiers pick up a tree and begin marching toward Dunsinane. The prophecy was that no one would take over Macbeth until Birnam wood came to Dunsinane. This would literally allow Birnam wood to come to Dunsinane. Macbeth is told about the army and laughs as if it’s no worry at all. Although, behind his ego, he knows that he will be killed soon. He gets his armor on and prepares for a fight. As Macbeth is preparing to fight a battle against the soldiers, he hears a screech. He tells someone to go see what the scream was. Macbeth is told that the scream was of Lady Macbeth who had just committed suicide. Macbeth knows that she was all he had left and that he no longer has the one thing that he loved. He goes into a deep depression and thinks about how life means nothing. He becomes very depressed but still acts as a tough king toward the army and the people in Dunsinane. Macbeth begins the battle with a few soldiers and defeats them easily. When he sees Macduff he is faced with a tough challenge. He knows that the prophecy says that no one of woman born shall defeat Macbeth. Macduff tells him that he was c-sectioned. Macbeth is horrified. Birnam wood had come to Dunsinane and now he is battling someone who was not of woman born. The prophecy was coming true. Macduff defeats Macbeth and presents his head to his army. Macbeth is defeated and killed in the final Act of the play.
Quotes
If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well. It were done quickly: if the assassination Could trammel up the consequence, and catch With his surcease success; that but this blow Might be the be-all and the end-all here, But here, upon this bank and shoal of time, We'ld jump the life to come. But in these cases We still have judgment here; that we but teachBloody instructions, which, being taught, returnTo plague the inventor: In this first half Of this aside Macbeth seems really conflicted as to whether or not to kill Duncan or not. He does not know if it's really worth the possible consequences seeing as he would become king anyway. On the other hand he wants to expedite the already known future but does not want to receive the position in a time of grievance.
“I’ll see no more./And yet the eighth appears, who bears a glass/Which shows me many more. And some I see,/That two-fold balls and treble scepters carry. Horrible sight”(Macbeth 67, Verses 117-121)! This quotation is important to the overall satisfaction of the play because it now shows the starting tread of horror and giving up the last restores that he has left in his pocket for Macbeth. Before Macbeth entered with the witches, there was a meeting between Lennox and an unmentioned lord where they both discuss of a possible operation where Macbeth must be eliminated and the chain of Being must be restored, with a helpful hints and information that Mr. Thomas presented in class of course. Shakespeare brilliantly leaves clues for the audience or the readers that there will be an end of Macbeth soon, but not now. Literature has displayed this surprising climax that allows the readers to be interested on what will happen next to the main characters. Of course, Macbeth must die, but there will a scene at which he is described as an “animal that has lost it abilities to fight and struggling to show strength, but it knows it lost the war but continues on to invent an infamous scene that history will record it forever.”
“The Prince of Cumberland: that is a step/On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap,/For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires,/Let not light see my black and deep desires,/The eye wink at the hand. Yet let that be,/Which the eye fears when it is done to see.” (Macbeth 13, Aside) This quotation has some significance to the overall plot of this play that relates to a tragedy of Macbeth. With the early encounter of the witches and the announcement of Malcolm’s taking the next throne by King Duncan, Macbeth has some intentions to actually let his destiny to happen, but the only way he could become the next king; he had to actually assassinate the king and any heirs to the throne. This is the first time that is mentioned to the readers or the audience that Macbeth wants to fulfill his destiny. Later in the play, we see that Lady Macbeth, Macbeth’s wife, wanted her husband to achieve such a task and encourage him to actually murder the king. This is just predictions, but is likely to happen, as I am assuming during this time, politics were taken in a different level that resulted to many deaths with families, especially, and the likelihood of major suspensions with noble people.
Themes
To call Macbeth a violent play is an understatement. It begins in battle, contains the murder of men, women, and children, and ends not just with a climactic siege but the suicide of Lady Macbeth and the beheading of its main character, Macbeth. In the process of all this bloodshed, Macbeth makes an important point about the nature of violence: every violent act, even those done for selfless reasons, seems to lead inevitably to the next. The violence through which Macbeth takes the throne, as Macbeth himself realizes, opens the way for others to try to take the throne for themselves through violence. So Macbeth must commit more violence, and more violence, until violence is all he has left. From the moment the weird sisters tell Macbeth and Banquo their prophecies, both the characters and the audience are forced to wonder about fate. Is it real? Is action necessary to make it come to pass, or will the prophecy come true no matter what one does? Different characters answer these questions in different ways at different times, and the final answers are ambiguous—as fate always is.Macbeth is a play about ambition run amok. The weird sisters' prophecies spur both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to try to fulfill their ambitions, but the witches never make Macbeth or his wife do anything. Macbeth and his wife act on their own to fulfill their deepest desires. Macbeth, a good general and, by all accounts before the action of the play, a good man, allows his ambition to overwhelm him and becomes a murdering, paranoid maniac. Lady Macbeth, once she begins to put into actions the once-hidden thoughts of her mind, is crushed by guilt.Macbeth has become so numb because of his own terrible actions that he can't even react when his wife dies. All he can do is comment on how meaningless life is.

Sean Stokes & Thomas Clark-Paths of Glory
Summary: Paths of Glory is a film that takes place during World War 1 describing and showing the trench warfare between the French and the Germans. The movie is surrounded around the plot of Major General Broulard asking his subordinate General Mireau to basically send his division on a suicide attempt of capturing the very well protected German position named the "anthill" Mireau is bribed to take part of this command as he is offered a promotion if the mission goes through. He then takes part in the trench life of the soldiers and asks if they are " ready to kill more Germans?". He leaves his detailed plan with Colonel Dax who protests the stupidity of this attack but is still forced to partake in the plan due to the ignorance of Mireau.
During a nighttime scouting mission Lieutenant Roget accidently kills one of his own soldiers with his own grenade. Corporal Paris finds the dead body and confronts Roget but Roget refuses any wrong doings so he falsifies his report to Colonel Dax. Dax leads the first attack over the trenches the next day. No men reach the German Trenches and the B Company refuses to leave the French Trenches. Mireau angered at his troops orders the artillery unit to open fire on the men to get them out of the trenches, but the artillery commander refuses. The attack fails so Mireau decides to court martial soldiers for cowardnice. Colonel Dax serves as the defender of the accused soldiers. Later in the court case The artillery commander (Captian Rousseau) tells Dax about MIreau's command and Dax shares the information with Broualard who dismisses Dax after the statements. The next day three soldiers are executed in the courtyard. Following the execution Broulard and Mireau go to breakfast were Dax enters and reveals the investigations happening around Mireau. Dax receives Mireau's command and calls him a "degenerate, sadistic man".
Quotes: "There are few things more fundamentally encouraging and stimulating than seeing someone else die."
This was said by General Broulard and displays his lack of care for his men, and his desire for a rank-up. We chose this because it displays general Broulards lack of care and the problems with class hierarchy in the army.
Corporal Paris: See that cockroach? Tomorrow morning, we'll be dead and it'll be alive. It'll have more contact with my wife and child than I will. I'll be nothing, and it'll be alive. [Ferol smashes the roach] Private Ferol: Now you got the edge on him.
The soldiers knew they weren't going to live too long and they made it obvious to each other throughout the movie. This quote displayed the lack of trust in the army and the knowledge the soldiers had(which was very little) was enough to tell them the time had come for them to die in battle.
General Broulard: It would be a pity to lose your promotion before you get it. A promotion you have so very carefully planned for. Colonel Dax: Sir, would you like me to suggest what you can do with that promotion? General Broulard: [angry] Colonel Dax! You will apologize at once or I shall have you placed under arrest! Colonel Dax: I apologize... for not being entirely honest with you. I apologize for not revealing my true feelings. I apologize, sir, for not telling you sooner that you're a degenerate, sadistic old man. And you can go to hell before I apologize to you now or ever again!
This quote outlines once again the problems with the army. Everyone was going for promotions, doing everything they needed to get it. Colonel Dax cares for his men and this creates tension between him and his leader when he explains that he will not do stupid things to rank up. We chose this quote because it outlines the whole movie and how no one truly cared for one another. When someone did something to help others they were scolded.
Characters: Colonel Dax: Refuses to send his men on a suicidal mission and defends them at a trial for cowardice Major General Georges Broulard: Top honcho of the French Army, doesn't care about his soldiers, instead he cares about getting results
Brigadier General Paul Mireau: Just as interested in his men, all he cares about is promotions and awards
Lieutenant Roget: Kills his own men and hides it by choosing a man who witnessed the murder to death row
Theme: Surrealism. This was a cultural movement in the 20's that brought people out of a dream and serenity mindset, and reminded them that life can be pretty messed up. Surprise, Juxtaposition and non sequitur were all present in this cultural movement and it influenced some of the greatest art of today. It reached a golden age in the WWII and post WWII era and sought to fix the problems with the world that had been hidden for such a long time up until the first world war.
RIP A$AP TOMMY

This is presented to you by Othon Kordistos, Richard Liriano, Joel Urena
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Summary: There is a man named Gregor and he must work to keep his family alive. One morning he wakes up and discovers he is a vermin. The first thing that occurs to him when he discovers this is how will he get to work. His boss comes to his house and demands that Gregor come to work, meanwhile Gregor is locked in his room unable to get out on account that he is a bug. Finally he manages to escape, but the boss is gone by then. His family sees him and is disgusted. They lock him in his room and his dad forbids his mother and sister from seeing him. His sister secretly sneaks him food, but even she becomes disgusted with him after a while. The rest of his family realizes they are all able to work and get jobs and that they do not need Gregor to work anymore. They all ignore Gregor. At one point Gregor is able to escape from his room, but there are tenants in the house. His dad becomes outraged, beats him and throws an apple at him that gets stuck in his back. Gregor gives up, stops eating and eventually dies. The maid finds his corpse in his room one day and alerts the family. They are not fazed by his death and decide to move out and start fresh without Gregor.
Characters: 1. Gregor Samsa= The main character who is a traveling salesman for a very invasive company. He hates his job because he has absolutely no freedom, he missed one day of work and his boss went to his house and interrogated Gregor's family. His major conflict is that he has transformed into a giant bug for the rest of his life. But even as a bug he still thinks like a human but can't speak like one, so he isn't able to communicate with anyone.
2. Grete Samsa= This is Gregor's sister who, for the first part, shows pity to Gregor and cares for him. This love turns bad when she realizes that he is going to be a bug forever, so she stops caring for Gregor and eventually just leaves his life.
3. The father= He is Gregor's father, obviously. He can be described as the a-hole of the story. He doesn't have a job and mooches off of Gregor. He doesn't even seem to show compassion for Gregor especially when he becomes a bug. Since Gregor can't work he is forced to get off his lazy ass and start working again. This fuels his hostility towards Gregor.
4. The mother= She is Gregor's mother. She loved Gregor until she saw him in his new form. The shock from Gregor causes her to become weak with fear and she is left to decide between loving Gregor or fearing him. She eventually leaves with the father and Grete to start a new life without Gregor.
Themes: Solitude and Isolation: We see in The Metamorphosis that the extreme loneliness that Gregor faces after his family locks him up is immense. Gregor experiences family life through the body of this bug and through the bits of sound and light that peaks through his bedroom door. Throughout the story as more and more of his family begins to see him as a burden, until even his little sister just leaves him there to die, alone. Human Worth: Gregor’s family treated him like an indentured, they did not appreciate him as a son, they appreciated the work that he did and the lifestyle that he provided. Once he became a vermin he was slowly but surely discarded by his family, they began to care less about him until they just slowly left him to die. As soon as he became a vermin everything about him revolved around that fact, he was not the son that his mother and father loved or the brother that his sister adored, he was vermin, nothing more.
Quotes: 1. "Why was only Gregor condemned to work for a firm where at the slightest omission they immediately suspected the worst? Were all employees louts without exception, wasn't there a single loyal, dedicated worker among them." (pg. 9) This quote signifies how terrible Gregor's life was. He was working at a job that didn't even trust their workers. Gregor's life just gets worse and worse as the story evolved, at this point we see that even before he was a bug, Gregor had a bad life.
2. "They had just gotten used to it, the family as well as Gregor, the money was received with thanks and given with pleasure." (pg. 27) This was in the second part of the book and this shows the little love actually offered by the family to Gregor. This shows how the family just used Gregor for the money he got from his horrible job. Gregor's life was just terrible in almost every aspect of the word. This also shows the life lesson that money is really what everyone cares about, money is the reason that the father no longer loves Gregor; if that is the reason why he loved him in the first place then it seems there was no love their at all.
3. "I won't pronounce the name of my brother in front of this monster, and so all I say is: we have to try and get rid of it. We've done everything humanly possible to take care of it and to put up with it; I don't think anyone can blame us in the least." (Part 3) At this point the family just gave up on Gregor. They no longer even refer to him as a person; they now call him ‘it’. To the family Gregor has fulfilled his role in their lives and, at this point, they no longer care for him and need to find a way to get him to leave or die, maybe. This quote shows how easily people can leave your life and emphasizes how messed up the world is or was.
See you on the flip side, Tommy boy

Shane Crockett, Kasper Grispino Macbeth, Act 3 by William Shakespeare
Macbeth- The King of Scotland, who ordered a hit on his best friend Banquo. Later, at a feast, Macbeth claims to see the ghost of Banquo. All of the Lords think that the King must be ill. Lady Macbeth assured them that this has happened since he was a kid and that it was nothing worth discussion. Macbeth then speaks with Lady about what has happened and how he has begun to grow suspicious of Macduff because of his failure to accompany everyone at the feast. They then decide to go and get some rest.
Banquo/ghost- In this act, Banquo grew suspicious over his best friend, Macbeth, and his sudden rise to power. Noticing this, Macbeth decides that he has to get rid of Banquo. Banquo then ends up getting murdered by a group of hit-men, who were hired by Macbeth. Later, during Macbeth’s feast, Banquo returns as a ghost. He is all bloodied and bruised and he begins to haunt Macbeth.
Murders- When Macbeth grew suspicious of Banquo. Macbeth then decided to hire three murderers to get rid of Banquo. Later, they all meet up and wait for Banquo and his son, Fleance, to walk by. When this occurs, they ambush Banquo and Fleance. They succeeded in killing Banquo, but Fleance escaped. They return the news to Macbeth. Macbeth is somewhat angered but still gives them half of their pay.
Lady Macbeth- When Macbeth begins to freak out over the appearance of Banquo, Lady Macbeth ensures the lords that Macbeth is fine. She claims that he has had experiences like these since he was a child. She then directs the Lords to leave so that Macbeth can get some rest. When the lords leave, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth discuss what is going on and decide what will soon occur.
Witches- The Witches are preparing for Macbeth’s arrival, their queen, Hecate and the other witches sing and dance.
Lennox- Lennox is one of the Lords that accompany Macbeth during his feast. Lennox is very concerned by the outburst made by Macbeth and grows suspicious of the truth behind King Duncan’s Death. He begins to think that Macbeth murdered Duncan out of greed and a desire for kingship. He speaks with the other lords about this and they begin to share his suspicion. He became suspicious because of all of the sudden deaths, along with the fleeing of Macduff and Duncan’s sons.
In Act 3 scene 1, Banquo is very suspicious of Macbeth and thinks to himself about what the witches said to Macbeth and him. When he was in thought, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and other people of the court enter and invite Banqou to the party they are having at night. He accepts and departs, everyone else except Macbeth and a servant leaves after Banqou. The servant says there are some people here to meet Macbeth; the servant leaves after that to fetch them. Macbeth then wonders about Banqou and his part in the prophecy. The murders enter accompanied with he servant and discuss with Macbeth about their job to kill Banqou. Macbeth says that he is the enemy and that Banqou has caused them great trouble in the past and now it your time to get revenge. The murders fall for this trick and accept the job to kill Banqou along with Fleance. In the next scene Lady Macbeth is a bit worrying and calls for her husband, Macbeth comes and assures her that this will be ok, but he won’t say what he is planning to do with Banqou. In Act 3 scene 3, the murder of Banqou happens; however another murders joins the duo that were originally meant to kill Banqou and Fleance. The trio of murders ambushes the two and manages to kill Banqou but not Fleance. Fleance runs away and goes into hiding after this. In Act 3 scene 4, the party that Banqou was invited to starts; the king and queen greet the party guests, until one of the murders from the trio from earliers the party room. Macbeths talks to him privately learning the Banqou is now dead; however his son still lives. The party continues and Macbeth is called to sit down, but he can’t because the ghost of Banqou is sitting on his chair. No one else can see this ghost, and Macbeth tries to convince people that there is a ghost on his chair. Lady Macbeth steps in and says the Macbeth normally have these visions, covering for her husband. The confused party guests leave and Macbeth mentions that he has spies in Macduff’s castle. Act 3, scene 5 is just queen Hecate and her witches preparing for Macbeth is come again and ask for their guidance. In Act 3, scene 6, news of Banqou’s death has spread and Lenox and another lord discuss about how Macduff has gone to England to meet Malcolm and raise an army against Macbeth. Both men wish Macduff is successful and is able to save Scotland from Macbeth
“Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck, till thou applaud the deed. Come, seeling night, scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day and with thy bloody and invisible hand cancel and tear to pieces that great bond which keeps me pale.”(Act 3 Scene 2) Here is when Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth to be at ease; however he doesn’t share his plan with her. He probably want’s to impress his wife saying how he planned their deaths all on his own.
“He needs not our mistrust, since he delivers our offices and what we have to do to the direction just”(Act 3 scene 3) He is when the second murders says that the third murderer joining them is trustworthy and they are both murderers so they would be fine. This third murder just appears out of nowhere and that may be alittle disheartening, but the second murder is ok with it.
“O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife! Tho know’st that Banqou and his son lives” (Act 3 Scene 2). Macbeth would never be at rest until those two are dead; he compares it to scorpions in his head, very painful and unconfortable. Macbeth is also somewhat lying to his wife here, he knows that he already planned their deaths by hiring murderers. Theme There is a lot of lying with a straight face in this Act. Macbeth lies to his wife and Banqou. Macbeth invites Banqou to party, but before that party he planned his murder; this may have been a cover to make it seem that Macbeth is still his friend when in reality he isn’t. Macbeth also keeps knowledge from Lady Macbeth saying that she is too innocent to hear what he is planning; he probably just wants to impress her saying that he planned the urder of these two by himself

James Podias and Phillip Georgiou Macbeth, Act 4 by William Shakespeare
Summary Act 4 is an act that helps build up the suspense in the play leading up to act 5. Although act 4 is very short compared to all the other acts in this play, containing only 3 scenes it is full of information. Many things happen in this act that have the reader in awe and waiting to see what happens next. This scene is definitely a suspense builder as we see actions in act 4 that make the reader want to know more from act 5.
Many big things happen in act 4 including the witches toying with Macbeth and telling him his fate, the death of Macduff's family by murderers sent by Macbeth, and a very important conversation between Malcolm, Macduff and Ross. All these events have the reader wondering what will happen next. Macbeth thinks he is invincible because the fate the witches told him is “not possible” and Macduff wants revenge for what Macbeth did to his family.
Theme - This reading exemplifies an important theme, the important theme is of being an anti-hero. Macbeth in this play in act 4 is clearly shown as an anti-hero. He is doing what is best for him but in the end it is for the worse of everyone else.
Characters 1)Macbeth- current King of Scotland and main character of the story. In this act Macbeth meets with the the three witches talking about the various magical spells they can perform as well as to discuss his future as king. Macbeth is then beginning to be approached by different apparitions such as the bloody child. He then receives news confirming that Macduff has fled to England to king Edward for troops in support of his rebellion. 2)Macduff- a Scottish thane who is currently trying to seek revenge against Macbeth. In this scene He talks with Malcolm and Ross about Macbeth and there plans to get ten thousand english troops to retaliate against the king of Scotland. 3)Malcolm- son of Banquo who in this scene tests the loyalty of Macduff's allegiance to Scotland. In the end Macduff passes the test. Malcolm then begins to encourage Macduff to prepare to attack Macbeth rather than mourn over the loss of his family. 4)Ross- another Scottish Thane who in this scene tells Macduff that his family has been brutally murdered by Macbeth. After coming back from talking with Lady Macduff and her family he goes to Macduff's castle with Macduff and Malcolm to further discuss there plans to revolt.
Quotes "Wisdom? To leave his wife, to leave his babes, His mansion, and his titles in a place From whence himself does fly? He loves us not. He wants the natural touch, for the poor wren, the most diminutive of birds, will fight, Her young ones in her nest, against the owl. All is the fear, and nothing is the love; as little is the Wisdom, where the flight So runs against all reason"(Lady Macbeth 69). Here Lady Macduff is arguing with Ross concerning the whereabouts of Macduff. She is mad that Macduff would leave her, his children, and his castle is such a time. I think this is important because I think we should recognize she should not be mad at Macduff but rather Macbeth since he is the reason why Macduff must be away in England.
"Your castle is surpris'd; your wife and babes Savagely slaughter'd. To relate the manner Were on the quarry of these murder'd deer to add the death of you"(Ross 79-80.) Here Ross delivers the news of Macduff's family being killed by Macbeth. This has a big effect on Macduff as he starts to lose focus on attacking Macbeth and just mourning the loss of his family.
"Dispute it like a man"(Malcolm 80). A short and yet simple quote but one that I think is very important. Malcolm tries to encourage Macduff to change his focus from mourning the loss of his family to attacking Macbeth and getting revenge.

Konrad Poniatowski and Nolan Riddick
The poem “MCMXIV” by Philip Larkin focuses on soldiers recruiting for the army while not recognizing the brutal factors of war. The title, which is in numerical form, translates into 1914, the year at which the First World War began. The wars had major effects on the generation of men during the early twentieth century and also on beliefs and values that were highly viewed for centuries are now being questioned after and during the war. The First World War introduced new technologies that killed men faster and more brutally then simply by fighting with swords and arrows. The poet that lived after this time period of horror and terror knew how these men that were recruiting to serve for their country had been influenced by the propaganda made by governments.
Many WWI stone memorials were incised with MCMXIV, so this poem functions as a literary war memorial. Roman numerals are not widely used anymore. Larkin wrote this poem in the early 1960s, so using Roman numerals is his ways of letting the reader know that he is writing about the past. Larkin was born four years after WWI ended; so he grew up in the aftermath of WWI but it felt like a distant and unfamiliar event to him. WWI is a major event in world history, because of the huge impact that it had on humanity; the war may have ended, but it continued to influence lives long after.
Possible Characters:
Recruiters- in the beginning of the poem; first stanza
Veterans- third stanza; “the place names all hazed over”
Those who died- third stanza; “Shadowing Domesday lines”
Country people and children- second stanza
Quotes:
“Never such innocence, | Never before or since, | As changed itself to past”
This quotation is significant because it shows how men were not aware of the horrors of war during the early 20th century. I think this quotation is important because men, who had normal lives and lived under normal circumstances, will be destroyed physically and mentally by the factors of war.
“Those long uneven lines | Standing as patiently | As if they were stretched outside | The Oval or Villa Park” This quotation is important to the overall point of the poem because these verses focuses on the theme of using propaganda to romanticizes about war and to encourage young men to go to war and support their country. I think this quotation is important because propaganda was used frequently to supply manpower to continue the campaign,
“And the countryside not caring: | The place names all hazed over | With flowering grasses, and fields | Shadowing Domesday lines” This quotation show significance within the poem because Larkin describes potentially white tombstones with soldiers’ names and emphasizing the number of these tombstones by using the word “hills.” I think is important to the understanding of the poem because Larkin wants to express the view at which the ones who did not survive such a conflict will be exemplified by rolls of stones to remember for those who died.

"Dulce et Decorum Est" was a poem written by Wilfred Owen. Owen wrote this poem to explain the horrors of World War II. Throughout the poem, Owen mentions some of his gruesome observations such as men with bloody feet and a soldier he thinks he is still on fire. The main action in the poem is when the soldiers face a gas attack and the speaker yells for them to grab their mask.
The poem is supposed to emphasize how World War II is in indeed a tragic event. This poem denounces propaganda for the war. It explains how World War II is a "lie." Owen explains that if children who were seeking glory knew about the tragedies, deaths, and gruesome sights of fighting the war, they wouldn't seek join the military.
"Dulce et decorum est" - this translates directly into something like "It is sweet and right." I feel like its important to use this as a quote because it reveals a lot about the poem. It leads us to the discussion of it is. Actually a horrible lie that brainwashed and/or naive people tell each other to make it seem like war is right. By the end of the poem and our discussion we know the irony in this, as war is full of terrible suffering, world war 1 in particular.
"But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots(4) Of tired, outstripped(5) Five-Nines(6) that dropped behind."
The foot notes show that the hoots are the sounds of rockets flying by, outstripped means that they outpaced them, and five nines are 5.9 caliber explosive shells. They were marching so beat down that they didn't even have a strong sense of self preservation with shells flying by and landing all around them.
"My friend, you would not tell with such high zest(13) To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory, The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori.(15)"
This really wraps it up. It shows how once you experience something so terrible you know that it's all a lie.
